New challenge on the horizon

It’s been almost 2 months since I participated in the Lonstar sprint in Galveston.  Since then so much has happened and none of it was training!  I did get a trip in to Tuscaloosa to volunteer with some of the recovery and bring a SUV loaded with items.  Words and pictures can’t truly portray the devastation.  I was excited to see that the USAT was doing something to assist in the recovery!

Back to my next triathlon – Bridgeland Sprint Tri in Houston on August 7!  I’m excited for this particular tri because I volunteered for it last year.  It was hot and humid but every person participating had a smile on their face.  Prior to actually registering, I did read some race reports and they were all positive as well so I decided to jump in with both feet!

How does this tri differ from the previous – one big difference is the swim!  It’s only 500 meters instead of 750 and it’s a lake swim rather than open water.  Both courses have flat bike and run routes, first race having strong winds and second race will have some head winds with the bike but possibly not as strong as the first race.  The run for the second race is 3.5 miles rather than the typical 3.1.Now I can’t forget the biggest difference, first race was in early April second race is in August……….in Houston…………….in August!  Fun times!

I’m trying a different training schedule, something a bit more simple yet structured.  Having 2 months off from training, I feel this is the best avenue to go.  The event is exactly 9 weeks away so plenty of time to get moving and bring things together.  Obviously I want to post a better time than my previous race but I’m not ready to “compete” with everyone else.  This is me against me, it’s a win-win situation!

Tonight I hit the gym for a little spin on the bike.  Plan called for 30 minutes, I did 32 to allow for a little cool down.  6.01 miles covered with an avg pace of 11.6 mph.  I threw in a couple (4 actually) sprints of 1 minute each with RPM over 110.  I’m not sure if that is a sprint for others, but it was for me!
