I’m sitting here watching the CBS special airing of the 2011 Kona race. Yes, I DVR’d it and yes, I have it saved so I can inspire myself any time I need to. While watching I was reminded of one the participants that caught my attention last year – Teri Griege.
Teri was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in 2009 which had metastasized to her liver. She went through chemo and radiation, having her colon & liver resected and more chemo and radiation. During this time, she continued to train for various races which included 2011 Ironman World Championship in Kona.
Anyone who knows anything about the sport of triathlon knows training alone is a bugger and can kick you when you’re down. Now imagine fighting cancer while training. When I first heard this story, I was amazed and inspired. My first thought – how amazing is this lady!
Here’s a little blurb from the Ironman Kona race. It’s less than 5 minutes and completely worth your time.
Teri finished Kona in 14:50:32. WOW!
Teri is still racing and I believe has beaten cancer. You can find out more information about her on her website here.
I’m waging my own little war against cancer. I’m using my participation in various races from now til the end of the year to raise funds to battle breast cancer. All funds raised will be donated to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. So please consider either making a flat donation or a set amount per mile raced.
Current miles raced – 18.41
My fundraising page can be found here. If you want to donate per mile, please email me (me@letstriagain.com) or comment so I can contact you in December with total miles raced. Don’t forget your email!!
With your help, we can kick cancer’s ass!!
